Apply to Informatics
Online applications are accepted January 22 – April 15 for autumn 2008 program admission.
Transfer Students: If you are transferring, you must also apply to the University of Washington Undergraduate Admissions. See the Transfer Students page for more information.
Freshman Direct Admission Program (FDAP) applicants who wish to be considered for Informatics may simply indicate “Informatics” as their choice of major on the UW admissions application. If you are accepted to the FDAP, you will not need to complete the Informatics online application form.
Application Instructions
To apply to the Informatics major you will need to complete your personal statement first. Once your statement is complete, you can fill out the online application form and then attach your completed statement at the end of the form.

Please also complete your personal statement (of 1-2 pages) before you begin the online application! The statement must be an electronic document in Microsoft Word, RTF, or ASCII text format. At the end of the online application form you will upload your personal statement to our server. Be sure to include your full name (and UW ID number if you have one) on your statement.
The Informatics major focuses on integrating people, information, and technology. Please choose one of the topics below to express your interest in the Informatics program.
- Given your interests, academic preparation, work experience, personal and/or cultural experience, describe how you might contribute to the Informatics major and/or to the field?
- Describe a critical problem you perceive existing at the intersection of information, people, and technology. Why is this an interesting problem to *you*? In other words, what is it about you personally that makes this problem important and interesting?
Please also include in your personal statement any additional information that you feel is important for the Informatics Admissions Committee to know. This might include information such as your demonstrated commitment to the area (e.g., related courses you have taken, work experiences, internships, etc.); hardships and barriers you may have had to overcome (e.g., disabilities or socioeconomic disadvantage); and any exceptions or special considerations you are requesting (e.g., substitution of a transfer course). The personal statement is typically about 2 pages.
The application collects basic information about you, including prerequisites. At the end of the form you will upload your personal statement. Fill out the application form now!
Before beginning the online application, please be sure that you are familiar with Prerequisite Courses requirements for the major. You will need to know how your credits satisfy the prerequisites for Informatics. See the Transfer Students page for help with converting credits from a different academic institution.
