Prerequisite Courses

The following prerequisite courses (or equivalents) may be in progress at that time of application to the major. Departmentally-approved transfer equivalents may be used to substitute for prerequisite courses. Each course must be completed with a minimum grade of 2.0. UW grades will be verified after spring quarter grades are posted. Students with coursework in progress at other institutions must submit most recent up-to-date transcripts with their application as well as their spring quarter grade reports as soon as they become available.

Fluency in Information Technology [required]

INFO 100 will be waived for students who have already completed CSE 142 or equivalent. If INFO 100 is waived, students will make up the five credits by taking additional elective credits in the major. Students may not receive credit for INFO 100 taken after CSE 142.

Personal Statement [required]

The Informatics major focuses on integrating people, information, and technology. Please address one of the topics below to tell us about your interest in the Informatics program.

  1. Given your interests, academic preparation, work experience, personal and/or cultural experience, describe how you might contribute to the Informatics major and/or to the field.
  2. Describe a critical problem you perceive existing at the intersection of information, people, and technology. Why is this an interesting problem to *you*? In other words, what is it about you personally that makes this problem important and interesting?

You may include in your personal statement any additional information that you feel is important for the Informatics Admissions Committee to know. This might include information that otherwise cannot be discerned from a review of your academic transcript, such as your demonstrated commitment to the area and hardships and barriers you may have had to overcome. The personal statement is typically about 2 pages.
