Online MLIS Residency Calendar

Mandatory on-campus residencies take place each quarter. Residencies are a valuable component of the Online MLIS program and we are committed to the quality of learning during the on-campus time. This is a time for students to collaborate and learn together while building a strong academic community. Residencies typically last for three days and are scheduled for the 1st week of each quarter.

Since residencies are mandatory for successful course completion as well as degree completion, you must plan on being at every residency required by a course. It is your responsibility to make appropriate plans for missing work or other engagements, as well as plan for travel costs and lodging expense during the on-campus residency. Failure to attend a required residency will result in you having to drop the course and possibly withdraw for the quarter. If a specific event or incident conflicts with the scheduled residency (religious holiday or health emergency, for example) then it is up to you to contact the instructor prior to residency to ask for other arrangements. It is then up to the instructor as to whether or not other arrangements can be made.

Residency Mission

One of the elements of the online MLIS program that sets it apart from other peer institutions providing an online degree is the residency model.  This model brings students to campus the end of the first week of every quarter to interact with instructors, staff and peers and to attend iSchool and UW oriented events.  The ability to obtain a degree without moving, yet still have a quarterly, face-to-face connection with the school, faculty and staff is one of the program strengths.

Our mission for the iSchool residency thus has two primary goals:

First, students come for courses. They come to campus for face-to-face interaction with instructors, with fellow students and to set class context for the quarter.  This may be done through the following:
  • Class interaction with peers and instructors on subject matter
  • Peer-instructor interaction
  • Peer-peer interaction
  • Building of social context to allow best work in groups
  • Group interaction – setting tone and easing logistical challenges posed by geographically dispersed members for the other 9 weeks
  • Building class community
  • Allowing experiential learning through activities, field trips, lab work, demos – elements that unfold better in a live, f2f environment given our current technology requirements
Second, students come to build community in a way not possible in a completely virtual environment.  They are building relationships in many different areas:

  • With the iSchool and UW community
  • With the cohort community
  • Advising
  • Technology and other training
  • Campus resources
  • Interaction with other program students
  • Fieldwork, portfolio, student organizations, volunteer opportunities, open meetings
  • Networking
  • Attending iSchool and UW related events
How does this affect you as a student in the MLIS Online program?

Consistency:  We are committed to providing a consistent, pedagogically sound residency for you.

What does this mean?  Courses have residencies required of them because the nature of the course content.  They are better delivered with an on-campus introduction and the ability to provide face-to-face interaction.  Pedagogically, we consider core classes to be important enough in setting the stage for future work in each decade area that they should ALWAYS, without exception, be accompanied by a residency.  Therefore the MLIS Program Committee has approved a required residency for all core classes and some elective classes.  Residencies will run every quarter (including summer) for these courses.

Community:  We are committed to providing avenues for community building while students are on campus for course interaction.

The iSchool is working to coordinate a variety of events to enhance community during residency time.  Each quarter will provide opportunities for different events (workshops, seminars, meetings, etc.) to help students maintain and enhance their relationships with the iSchool, UW and professional communities.  This mean that each quarter residency will run 4 days.  The first day of residency will be for optional events (workshops, seminars, etc) and the last 3 days will contain all classes.  The days of the week for residency classes and events will continue to be Wednesday through Saturday.

With this mission as our guide, we will work both short and long term to support the goals and objectives listed and provide you and future students with an MLIS education that has no equal.
