Online (distance) MLIS Resources
The Online MLIS Resources site is dedicated to information and communication specific to students enrolled in the Online (a.k.a. distance) MLIS program. Links to general academic resources for both residential and online students are found in the MLIS Student Guide. Links to course websites for all iSchool programs are found on the Course Websites page.
Making Connections
Academic Advising - Online MLIS students who have general academic advising questions (policies and procedures, classes, etc.) can contact the MLIS Academic Advisor, Marie Potter. If you have any questions on online learning technologies contact the Online Learning Administrator, Grace Whiteaker. Students should also refer to the MLIS Student Guide for forms, guidelines, and other important information.
Catalyst Learning Technologies - Catalyst encourages innovative uses of the University's infrastructure to support faculty and student research, education, and clinical applications of information technologies. In addition to a series of web tools to support learning and research, they also provide a series of "How-To" guides for common tasks you can accomplish using a variety of software and tools and online curriculum for student-led workshops on various technologies and software.
Online MLIS Chat - UWNetID and password required. Instructors of online classes may hold chat sessions at designated times during the week. Often these chat sessions are for logistical questions about the class, but they can also be related to course topics. Each class has a chat forum created for it. This is your chance to interact with your instructor and colleagues "in real time."
GoPost Forum - UWNetID and password required. A private threaded discussion forum to discuss any and all topics for online students only; faculty and staff do not have access.
iConnect Message Board - The iConnect Message Board brings together online students living outside of Seattle with members of the iSchool community who live in the Seattle area and who might be willing to host them during the required on-campus residencies. UWNetID and password required.
iPeer - iPeer matches incoming Online MLIS students with current online students who have traveled the same road. iPeer can help you learn more about the program from a current student’s perspective as well as connect with an online student in your local area.
MyUW - UWNetID and password required. Your personal Web page - the UW information you use most in one convenient, personalized site.
WebPINE - UWNetID and password required. UW web-based email system.
Textbook Exchange Forum - The Textbook Exchange Forum allows students to advertise their iSchool textbooks for sale or trade and to post requests for used textbooks.
UW Libraries - Link to the UW Libraries homepage.
Calendar and Registration
Online MLIS Registration - Registration services for online students are provided by UW Educational Outreach (UWEO). Prior to the quarterly registration deadlines you will receive an email from UWEO with an attached registration form that includes course offerings for that quarter, registration deadlines, and other important registration information. You may contact UWEO at 206-543-2310 or 800-543-2320.
Online MLIS Residency Calendar - Dates for upcoming residencies and policies on attendance. One of the elements of the Online MLIS program that sets it apart from other peer institutions providing a distance degree is the residency model. View the Residency Mission for more details.
Technology and Courses
Class Websites - Links to class websites – some require UWNetID and password.
Online MLIS Help - Online MLIS Help should be used to request technical support. Responses from Online MLIS Tech Support may take 24 to 48 hours. If an assignment is due, don’t panic. Contact your instructor and expect to hear back from Online MLIS Help as soon as possible. In some circumstances, requests for technical support made on a Friday or Saturday may require more than 48 hours for a response. If you have lost email access due to technical difficulties, you may contact the User Services Administrator at 206-221-4783.
iPrep Virtual Workshops - iPrep offers various virtual workshops, or help tools, that have been designed to help any student in the Information School who will work with the general Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) related to our online courses and, in many cases, the face-to-face (f2f) classes as well.
