MSIM students currently use ad-hoc methods of asset creation, storage, editing, retrieval, and publishing in their coursework. These assets are sometimes created incidentally in the course of lecture, and sometimes within the workflow stream of class projects. During our experience in the MSIM program we realized that there were several logistical processes relating to information management for every academic term and that there are few tools or procedures to support these logistics.
Learning Organizations and Knowledge Management are well studied in academic and professional literature. We determined that the focus of Learning Organizations is on process while the connotations for Knowledge Management have been shifted toward technological features for document management. While we believe that knowledge itself cannot be managed, technology can be applied to assist individuals in the management of explicit artifacts and the transfer of tacit knowledge. For this reason we decided to use the broader term of "Knowledge System" to bind the concepts of infostructure (formal rules governing the exchange of resources), infoculture (cultural and social processes), and infrastructure (technological features).
The MSIM Knowledge System for Class Projects provides a set of requirements, taxonomies and metadata for MSIM coursework.

To support the creation of a successful website redesign, it was important to understand how the current website was being managed, what content was present or missing, and how the content was created and placed on the web. I also wanted to address what I saw as an overall need for information policy at CSL and get a conversation started to that effect. An audit is about relating goals to what actually is in order to more clearly see where focused efforts are needed. An information audit looks at information use, resources and flows. The question I wanted to answer was: how does the Center for Spiritual Living's website and the running thereof stand in relation to CSL and its goals, intentions, vision and mission?

The Villa Marina HOA is a home owners association for the Villa Marina Condos. This organization and its property management office had an information requirement to aid in their audit processes for the parking lot, boat storage yard and boat piers. Although the information had been collected it had not been stored in the same format or place. Consequently the auditors had to hunt to find and gather the information specific to their audit processes. The purpose of this project was to build an information system that would provide easy access to all of the information required in a user-friendly format.

The purpose of the ePay initiative is to realize cost, process and support efficiencies by re-structuring the current payment authorization systems so a payment taken anywhere in the company uses a single customer wallet and workflow. This is part of the company's customer relationship management initiative to unify the customer information experience. Our goal for this project is to find a real-world application for the analysis, modeling, change management, project management and information behavior skills and tools we gained in the MSIM program. New tools are combined with existing processes and documents in use at The Seattle Times Company to develop a high-level analysis of the current and future workflow. This analysis is provided to business and technical stakeholders to assist them in making decisions about the project.
