Time Frame For Planning the Internship
A minimum of 4 credits of IMT 590 must be completed in order for Day MSIM students to meet graduation requirements. Internship placements are facilitated with the MSIM Academic Advisor, a minimum of one quarter before the actual internship experience begins. The MSIM Academic Advisor holds regular information sessions to explain the internship process to current students.
Variable Credit (2-4 credits)
IMT 590 may be taken for 2-4 credits, depending on the number of hours the student plans to devote to the internship for the given quarter. Two (2) credits require 100 hours; three (3) credits require 150 hours; and four (4) credits require 200 hours.
A minimum of 4 credits of IMT 590 must be completed in order for Day MSIM students to meet graduation requirements.
The general rule is that Day MSIM students complete an internship experience for a minimum of 2 quarters (Autumn and Winter). The curriculum is designed so that the internship experience will lead directly into the student’s Capstone experience (IMT 595) during their final Spring quarter in the program.
Students may also elect to register for and complete their internship experience a quarter early, during Summer quarter, with a full time position.
Day MSIM students pursue IMT 590 during their second year in the program. Students must also complete the courses listed above under “General Prerequisites” before they are eligible to register for IMT 590.
Since setting up an internship requires significant time, students are required to begin the process a minimum of one quarter before their internship begins. In general, students should plan on working with MSIM Academic Advisor the Spring quarter before they register for IMT 590 in order to set up the internship.
Day MSIM students are required to attend an IMT 590 information session (organized by the MSIM Academic Advisor) before submitting required paperwork. Students should plan on attending an information session a minimum of one quarter before they register for IMT 590.
Ultimately, the initial paperwork (Internship Application Form, Internship Course Checklist, Current Resume) must be submitted to the MSIM Academic Advisor no later than the Friday of the 4th week of the quarter preceding the initial internship quarter.
After the initial paperwork is submitted, the MSIM Academic Advisor will meet individually with the student to strategize and help facilitate actual placement at an internship host site.
Students should register for IMT 590 during the actual quarters in which they pursue their internship. No retroactive credits will be given.
There are three primary criteria that a setting or experience must meet in order to qualify as an MSIM internship:
- The internship site/experience must be approved by the MSIM Academic Advisor (or IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator) as meeting minimum standards for the scope of an MSIM internship experience. Students should always confer with the MSIM Academic Advisor before contacting a potential internship site or supervisor.
- The student’s work/ projects/ tasks must be primarily of a professional or beginning professional nature.
- The internship must constitute a learning experience for the student that relates to the academic scope of the MSIM program.
Additional Policies and Procedures
Students should always confer with the MSIM Academic Advisor before contacting a potential internship site or supervisor. The MSIM Academic Advisor will assist the student in making initial contact with possible host sites. It is the responsibility of Day MSIM students to contact the MSIM Academic Advisor a minimum of 1 quarter before they plan to begin their internship. Refer to MSIM Internship (IMT 590) Basic Steps for a detailed summary of how to set up an internship.
IMT 590 is a CR/NC course. The student’s Learning Objective Agreement, Mid-Internship Report, Supervisor’s Final Evaluation, student’s Final Narrative Report, and the exit interview with the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator will serve as a basis for course credit.
MSIM internships may be paid or unpaid. The learning aspects of the experience --not whether or not the position is paid -- are the primary concern of the School. The student is responsible for any travel arrangements and living expenses while enrolled in IMT 590.
Course Requirements
The following requirements must be met in order to receive credit for IMT 590. It is the student’s responsibility to complete all requirements in a timely manner. If any of these course requirements are not met, the student may receive either a No Credit (NC) grade or an Incomplete (I) grade.
Schedule an interview with the MSIM Academic Advisor and bring completed copies of:
- Internship Application Form
- Internship Course Checklist
- Up to date copy of your resume
Ultimately, you will need to submit a signed and completed copy of the “Confirmation and Contact Information for MSIM Internship” form in order to receive the necessary add code for IMT 590. The “Confirmation and Contact Information for MSIM Internship” form serves as verification for the MSIM Academic Advisor of a host site’s willingness to pursue an internship with the student. Learning objectives agreement
During the first week of your internship you should meet with your host site supervisor and complete the “MSIM Internship Learning Objectives Agreement”. After you and your supervisor complete this agreement, it should be forwarded to the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator via email attachment.
For a full time, summer-only position, mid-summer quarter is when you should meet with your host site supervisor to complete the Mid-Internship Report. As soon as the two of you complete this report, submit the completed form to the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator (no later than the final instruction date of the quarter).
For part time positions spread over multiple quarters, you should meet with your host site supervisor to complete the Mid-Internship Report every mid-quarter (about 5 weeks into each quarter). As soon as the two of you complete this report, submit the completed form to the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator (no later than the final instruction date of the quarter). If the student and/or the supervisor determine that the Learning Objectives Agreement should be revised, please note this on the Mid-Internship Report. The IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator will evaluate the Mid-Internship Report to verify adequate progress. Assuming adequate progress is being made, the student may continue to register for IMT 590 for the next quarter in order to complete the internship.
During subsequent quarters of the internship (in a multiple quarter position), the student completes the tasks and projects outlined in the Learning Objectives Agreement.
Two weeks before the end of the final quarter of the internship the student should prompt their host site supervisor to complete the “Supervisor’s Final Evaluation” form, which the supervisor then sends directly to the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator via email attachment.
One week before the end of the final quarter of the internship the student should complete their Final Narrative Report and submit this to the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator.
It is the responsibility of the student to contact the IMT 590 Faculty Coordinator no later than two weeks before the end of their internship in order to schedule an exit interview. All final paperwork (including the Supervisor’s Final Evaluation and the Student’s Final Narrative Report) must be submitted at least two days before the exit interview so that the Faculty Coordinator has sufficient time to review these documents before the interview.
