Personal Information Management
Personal information management (PIM) is the study and practice of how people acquire, organize, maintain, and retrieve information for everyday use. PIM is a growing area of interest as we all strive for better use of our limited personal resources of time, money, and energy, as well as greater workplace efficiency and productivity.

The classic problem of information retrieval, simply put, is to help people find the relatively small number of things they are looking for (books, articles, web pages, CDs, etc.) from a very large set of possibilities. This classic problem has been studied in many variations and has been addressed through a rich diversity of information retrieval tools and techniques.

Patients often must coordinate their health care schedule and tasks, often as they try to maintain their normal professional and personal lives. This research seeks to understand patients’ information management work and to develop new technology that will support that work. Models of patients’ personal health information management work will be developed, along with new technology that supports patients in that work. Results will be evaluated for their usefulness.
