Technology Exploration Lab

The Technology Exploration Lab (TE Lab) is an innovative facility. The lab was designed from the ground up to allow students to explore a variety of technologies and to collaborate with their peers. The TE Lab is located in Mary Gates Hall (MGH) 440.

The main room contains a 24-station lab area, and three more workstations for group use are located in the Team Lab. See lab computer specifications and installed software.

The Team Lab and Student Server Room are located within the TE Lab.

Team Lab

The Team Lab facilitates collaboration and group projects. Three Apple iMacs with 24" displays are set up with sufficient space for small groups to gather around them for discussion. One station is connected to a 42" wall mounted Plasma with a SmartBoard overlay panel.  The other two stations are also connected to a Pioneer 42" wall-mounted plasma display.  A MiniDV deck and S-VHS VCR are set on all three machines up to support video capture and editing.

Student Server Room

Students can install alternative operating systems such as Linux; set up their own file, web, or database server; and become system administrator. Students can reserve these machines to setup operating systems, services, or applications of their choice.

See student server specifications.

Each server includes a removable hard drive that allows students to install operating systems, services, or applications of their choice and have full administrative privileges on that server.

Keyboard/Video/Mouse (KVM) switches allow access to installed operating systems.

Network wiring, hubs, and routers are accessible in the TE Lab server room so that students can experiment with setting up their own networks.
