Brief Biography:

I joined both the Division of Biomedical and Health Informatics in the School of Medicine, and the Information School at the University of Washington in January of 2002. I came to the lush Northwest from sunny Southern California, where I was an Assistant Professor in the Information & Computer Science Department at the University of California, Irvine. In 1999, I received my PhD in Medical Informatics from Stanford University, where I initially worked in the Knowledge Systems Lab and later focused my research completely in the Stanford Medical Informatics Group.

I also served time in non-academic settings. For 4 years, I worked on the CYC Project, an ambitious project to encode all of common-sense knowledge into a computer program. During the first year and a half of my time on CYC, I also completed a Master's degree in Computer Science at the University of Texas in Austin. I initially moved to Texas in 1988 to work for NASA's Johnson Space Center and write a computer program that would prescribe exercise to the astronauts to help them stay fit while they spent many months in micro-gravity environments. (Ask me sometime about getting to do research in the Vomit Comet!)

My bachelor's degree was in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where I helped develop computer-aided engineering tools for communications engineers at their Information and Telecommunication Technology Center.
