All Animals Have a Home: Paws Print

In Argentina, the growing stray dog and cat population challenges animal shelters facing limited funding, organization, and volunteer support. To tackle this issue, we partnered with Vinoly, an Argentine tech-consulting firm, to develop three innovative solutions. First, a resource guide outlining efficient shelter organization based on successful U.S. models. Second, a landing page for Vinoly. Lastly, a platform fostering connections between shelters and volunteers. By implementing these strategies, Paws Print aims to substantially enhance animal welfare in Argentina over the long term, remaining committed to creating a lasting, positive impact on the lives of these vulnerable animals.

An Information Literacy Moveable Feast: Personal Data Privacy Literacy

This OER program design will consist of information literacy workshops that can be used to supplement US undergraduate core curricula, as well as provide academic librarians with teaching opportunities. They can be offered at any institution using the materials provided by the program to seamlessly fit within a variety of core curricula. The first workshop addresses the problem of personal data privacy literacy awareness amongst college students, providing them with foundational knowledge of the personal data privacy landscape. The project will make a difference in students’ day-to-day lives as they manage and navigate their own personal data privacy literacy journeys.

An Interactive Data Visualization Initiative for Washington State Library

The Washington Digital Newspaper (WDN) program of the Washington State Library has led to the creation of an online repository with approximately 600,000 pages of historically significant newspapers. It serves as a valuable resource to explore American history and can be utilized for numerous projects and research opportunities. This project aims to assist the library in growing a diverse newspaper collection by mapping data results. Our data visualization solution offers a comprehensive platform and an interactive way to analyze the current data, identify gaps and patterns while increasing the data's accessibility worldwide via Tableau public.

Asian Community Needs Assessment for Biblio Lotus

In March 2021, Pima County Public Library introduced the Biblio Lotus Team, whose mission is to support and value the culture and voices of Asian communities in Pima County by providing resources and programs and establishing partnerships with Asian organizations. Biblio Lotus wanted to increase engagement with Asian communities. For our project, we conducted a Library Needs Assessment of Pima County’s Asian communities by conducting surveys and interviews, compiling our findings into a report. Using these findings, Biblio Lotus can evaluate current programming and services to more strongly engage Asian communities, increase their patronage, and create more community partnerships.

Assessing for Learning: Building a Framework for Elementary Libraries in Tacoma Public Schools

Elementary Teacher Librarians in the Tacoma Public Schools currently do not have an assessment framework specific to libraries to evaluate student growth and learning that is tied to TPS library learning targets and current AASL standards. I followed best practices to create customizable a pre- and post-survey tool using a qualitative rating scale using Microsoft Forms that librarians can administer to students, which allow for the collection of quantifiable and qualitatively rich data. Data gathered can be used to measure student growth, identify reteaching opportunities, and to improve librarians’ professional practice. Benefits extend to students, teachers, and administrators as well.

Automatic Privacy Notice Checker

Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) currently evaluates the privacy notices of their data recipients who collect information about state residents for business purposes manually. This process is time-intensive, inconsistent, and prone to human error. Our team developed an Automated Privacy Notice Checker (APNC) tool to address these concerns. APNC assesses these privacy notices based on defined baseline requirements and highlights the non-compliant areas by these data recipients as per the DOL standards. Our solution makes the entire process more consistent, quick and data-driven. With improved efficiency, our tool empowers the DOL in securing the data of Washington State Residents.

BACtracker: Increasing Alcohol Health Literacy in Young Adults

Overuse of alcohol at a young age can lead to dangerous in-the-moment and long-term consequences. However, current legal restrictions and preventive approaches are not sufficient to reduce alcohol abuse; information gaps and misinformation regarding alcohol safety remain. To address this, we created BACtracker, an app providing easy-to-access information about alcohol and safe drinking practices to young adults, especially those within gender minorities. Featuring an extensive Information Hub and personalized Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) Calculator, our app helps young adults make more informed, accurate decisions about alcohol consumption to keep them and their communities safe.

Bawbab DAI MVP

In Kenya, the lack of formal addresses hinders package delivery. Our solution utilizes remote sensing images and mapping platforms to create a robust digital addressing system. We developed a prototype using GIS technologies, efficient design, and intuitive UX. Through UX research and development, we created an MVP that streamlines last-mile delivery and enhances user satisfaction. This benefits e-commerce, logistics, and end-users with a digital address. Accurate addresses improve emergency response and the delivery of essential services like healthcare and education. Our solution tackles this challenge, providing efficient delivery and improved accessibility in Kenya's address system.

Behind the Scenes at Special Collections

This project was started to address the issue of building community engagement for special collections and archives. We noticed that there were several collections in the UW Special Collections that were not being utilized because they have not been rehoused or accessioned. We decided to attempt to create a volunteer event that would make use of these collections while increasing community awareness of Special Collections. After our initial test of the event, we have realized that although there are adjustments to be made with the event, overall, it will be beneficial to bringing people in to see the collections.
